The Last Supper Art Show presented by La Familia, Studio 5 and Transmit Device
was held at Atlanta's Five Spot in Little 5 Points Valentine's Day weekend.
A preview show on Feb. 12th drew an impressive Thursday night
crowd. A few of the contributing artists were on hand including Tony Olivas,
Deano Cook, James Hogan, Watson Atkinson, Mikey Jenkins and the crews
from a few of the local Atlanta tattoo shops. Over 60 artists contributed
to the show. Todd Smithson and Rene' Arriagada organized the event
and were running around in host mode - wide eyed and smiling, greeting
everyone and discussing the art.
The Five Spot provided an artsy, eco-charged video projection on
a large screen that hung above the venue's stage. A DJ played soulful
tunes and the gathering crowd of art fans and partyers mixed and
socialized while admiring the adorned walls. Tony Olivas of Sacred
Heart and Deano Cook of Psycho Tattoo had a corner table filled
with close friends and free spirited ladies that were not afraid to
expose their own artistic ... uhh ... endowments. The Five Spot is a
bar / nightclub after all and the
spirits were flowing.
A few pieces of art were
sold that evening including a small
masterpiece by Mike Dorsey.
Friday night brought an even
bigger crowd as art show fans and
Five Spot regulars filled the place to
capacity. A poetry driven jazz fusion
band called the Eric Wright Band
gave rhythm to the night as a few
hundred people stared into the
minds eye of these gifted artists.
The show brought together a
broad spectrum of talent, primarily
tattooists, all working in mediums of
their choosing - from free standing
sculptures to wall sculptures, charcoal
sketches, water colors, acrylics and oil paintings, and photography.
Styles ranged from abstract to surreal to graffiti. For many who attended,
it was an eye opening experience to see the range of skills from so
many of Atlanta's talented tattooers - slinging ink on canvas instead of
skin. The buzz generated was enough to sell 10 pieces and nearly 20
prints during the show's three day run.
It was a great event. Congratulations to Rene and Todd and all the
people involved in the success of the show. We're looking forward to
the next one.
