Atlanta's Piercing Experience offers a soothing and
tranquil atmosphere along with an
incredibly clean, safe environment, and does it
without being uptight or stuffy.
As you enter the building, you'll notice hard earned and
well deserved awards cover one wall near the counter area.
There are many of them, a testament both to Piercing
Experience owner Brian Skellie's skills and the shop's longevity
in an industry where studios and names come and go.
Across the
counter,
you'll find
certificates
from independent
laboratories
where he
has his
equipment is
checked
every week
- far more
frequently then any law currently requires - guaranteeing the
sterility of his procedures. The jewelry cases (and there are
many) are filled with an astounding quantity of original pieces
of jewelry, many of which border on art sculptures, yet
designed, and perfectly safe for insertion into the body. If
you're looking for something you've never seen in a piercing
before, Piercing Experience offers a balance of sterility and
simple beauty.
In another case, molded plastic body parts filled with
innovative piercing ideas give hints that more is possible than
perhaps your average consumer would suppose, and really
help get the imagination working. Brian offers glass, wood,
bone, stone and titanium in barbells, captive rings, claws, plugs
and more. The list goes on and on.
Brian himself is an Atlanta native, and has set up his shop
less than two miles from the house he grew up in. He began
piercing himself in 1992, and did not intend for his hobby to
go any further than that at the time, however, the encouragement
of friends, and constant requests for his help and
knowledge in piercing, eventually led him to seek out Jack
Yount, who would help steady Brian's hand, and give him the
knowledge he needed to begin piercing others. By 1994,
Brian's clientele had expanded, and after short stays at Urban
Tribe, and another at Sacred Heart Tattoo, he opened
Piercing Experience, Atlanta's premier piercing studio
on McLendon Ave.
Although his introduction to the world of
body modification was borderline Tao, Brian's
personal standards in materials, methods and
sterility really raised the bar for the rest of
the tattoo/piercing community. He is always
available to answer questions, and has the
proverbial cornucopia of knowledge to share
on topics ranging from jewelry materials, to
the way the jewelry is handled and cleaned, to
the latest research on endotoxins and pyrogens.
Somehow Brian also finds time to keep up
with current legislation in Washington and in our
own backyards. When someone puts up a fishy
bill, not only does Brian know about it, he's out
there organizing protests, drafting letters to
politicians, doing what it takes to keep the industry
safe from those who would see it banned.
Brian also has, and continues to, lobby for regulation
in the industry, always pushing for higher
standards
where others
are content
to follow the
status quo.
Inside the industry, Brian also works diligently to
spread the wealth of knowledge. He has set up a gathering
of minds in the industry, a forum where other professionals
like himself can ask questions, and get real, factbased
answers in a peer-to-peer environment rather than
the standard master-apprentice approach based on someone's
personal observations or ego trips. Because-I-saidso
just isn't good enough for Brian, and he has found, for
himself, a better answer. Brian Skellie is a true pioneer of
the industry, and one who continues to forge ahead, bringing
solid information based on science to the piercing
industry in a time when it is so crucially needed.
