Record Club: The Songs of Leonard Cohen

There is a certain type of person that respects Leonard Cohen for whatever it is that everybody respects him for, even if they don’t fully understand what that is. I am that type of person. Still, it was Beck and his ambitious Record Club project that sparked my interest in his version of The Songs of Leonard Cohen, which features other musicians such as Devendra Banhart, Binki Shapiro, MGMT and Brian Lebarton. “Sisters of Mercy”, my favorite Leonard Cohen song is, not surprisingly, my favorite track on this record. It’s also one of the few that seem to have been recorded by Beck alone. Other highlights include “Suzanne”, “Winter Lady” and “So Long Marianne”. If you like Beck and Leonard Cohen, there is no question. If you like Beck and some other, bearded hipsters, pick it up. If you are a die hard Leonard Cohen fan, though, it might feel like Weird Al versions of the soundtrack to all of your romantic nights of years past.
