On Parallels
Suburban Home
Remarkably enough, by the time that you read this, LaGrecia will no
longer be a band. In fact, they are one of the few acts in recent history
that have actually dissolved over a month before their first release, and as
evidenced by this review taking place, the final product did eventually
materialize. Helming the band was ex-Kid Dynamite/None More Black
singer Jason Shevchuk, whose languid and gruff voice becomes the primary
focus of every LaGrecia song as it dictates nearly every rise and
turn. Unfortunately, while the moods of Shevchuk’s former bands were able to range from sarcastic
to nostalgic to seething, LaGrecia operates in such a tepid and deliberate manner that no anger
comes off as genuine and no reflection as inspired or cutting. It doesn’t help that the music is unable to captivate, resembling a weaker, looser NMB circa their last album more than the fresh and startling stuff it should be.
