Sophie likes to go by "SoLadyCat," and her tattoos fit the name. This
22 year old from France is an artist, singer, writer, and model, and
still finds time to turn heads in the street. If you're nowhere near
France, but still want to do a few more double takes, Sophie is a
SuicideGirl and goes by the name LadyCat. This feisty feline lover has
also published a book of poetry. With all of this talent and beauty, PRICK is
proud to introduce Sophie to the American tattoo audience.
Max: What are your thoughts on France? Is it more traditional, or contemporary?
What do you love about it?
Sophie: Of course, I love my country—for its past, for its culture. What I love the most in France is
our language! It's not a secret; French is one of the most beautiful languages in the world! But, I think
French people must open their minds. Being different is like a crime here, so I would say the people
here are definitively traditional. Too much!
I read that cats are your love, and they took the place
of boys. Tell me what that means, and tell me what you
love about cats.
[Laughs] It's definitely a different kind of love with cats and boys.
Animals can give you so much, and never judge you. I've been deceived
by so many boys, and my cat became a way to medicate my feelings.
When I was younger I was always in a bad mood and wanted to die,
but since my cat has become a big part of my life, I feel better. Cats
symbolize freedom to me. Cats can do whatever they want. A cat can
just run after butterflies all day. Also, cats have a beautiful walk.
When did you decide you wanted to get tattooed?
What was your first experience like?
I've always loved art. Even as a little kid I would draw on myself with
makeup for fun. So, I guess I've always loved tattoos. I remember being
10 and looking at tattoo magazines and thinking those people were
really free. I got my first tattoo when I was 16, not so young. It was
an orchid, but the artist wasn't very good, and it wasn't a great choice
in the end. Now the orchid is covered up by my 2 black cats on my
back. First experiences are often bad, right?!
How do you chose your artist and designs?
When I turned 18, I started to develop a real passion for body modification.
My piercer of five years was also a tattoo artist, and that's where it really
started. I went to his shop and asked for my first cat tattoo, and since then
I haven't stopped! I talk a lot with my tattoo artist, but I know I can trust in
him and just say, "Hey Fred, I would like this kind of drawing, but with different
stuff here and there," and he understands before I'm finished explaining.
Any plans for your tattoos in the future?
In the next few weeks my right arm will be tattooed! I'm going to get
Japanese fans, and I want it to be the same style as my left arm. Of course,
some cats will be included in the fans. Then I want some cat tracks on the
back of my legs. I need to do something beautiful on my bottom! Don't
know exactly what that will be yet, but Fred will figure it out. I want a big
puma on my back, and a geisha too. Someday I would like to get a pinup of
Marilyn Monroe, because she's my idol. I will include a cat it that one too.
I'm excited to get tattooed soon, and I know it will make me feel better. As
wonderful as a painting!
